Villanova, Pa. - Imogen Brooker and Aili Hietala were victorious in their singles matches, but the Seton Hall women's tennis team took a 5-2 defeat at Villanova Tuesday at the Villanova Tennis Complex in a match that was closer than the score indicated.
"I'm incredibly happy with how we played today, " said Seton Hall head coach James Enzler. "This might have been the best we battled from start to finish all year. The girls came in incredibly focused and fought for every point. We had the chances to win, but Villanova did a good job of holding us off. If we can keep that same energy for the last two week of the season, I'm really excited to see what it results in."
Villanova won the doubles point to go ahead, but Hietala evened things up with her win in the No. 6 position, defeating Valieriia Kornieva, 6-3, 6-3. It was her fourth win of the spring.
Brooker continued her hot run over the last few weeks, winning her fourth singles match in a row, defeating Maggie Gehrig in a thrilling three-setter at the No. 2 position, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).Â
Villanova clinched team victory with wins at the Nos. 5, 1 and 4 positions. At No. 4, Emily O'Donovan had a shot to win, pushing Jenna Stevens to three sets.
The Pirates conclude regular season Friday against the UConn Huskies in Manchester, Conn. The BIG EAST Tournament will take place April 18-21.
