
Sarrias Pro, Pirates Advance on Moving Day at BIG EAST

The Pirates move up to third and will play in the top group for the final round on Monday.
OKATIE, S.C. – Junior Ana Sarrias Pro (Cadiz, Spain) fired a 1-over-par, 73, in Sunday's second round to boost the Seton Hall women's golf team to a third-place standing entering the final round of the 2024 BIG EAST Championship at Callawassie Island Golf Club.

Sarrias Pro had a birdie and 15 pars to shave seven strokes off her first-round score and rocket up the leader board. After two rounds, she's tied for 16th place with a 9-over-par, 80-73-153.

As a team, The Hall was three strokes better on Sunday to push past Butler into third place with 18 holes remaining. The Pirates shot a 9-over-par, 297, in round two. It's only the program's fourth sub-300 single-round in BIG EAST history and the third-lowest ever for a Seton Hall team in the conference's marquee event.Â

For the tournament, The Hall is 21-over-par with a 300-297-597. It has a comfortable 15-stroke lead on Creighton for fourth place. Xavier remains the team leader, but Georgetown made a serious run at the four-time champs in the second round. The Musketeers are 4-over-par, but the Hoyas are in second only two strokes behind.Â

The top individual Pirate for the tournament continues to be senior Ginevra Zavagli (Rome, Italy), who had two birdies and 13 pars in route to a 2-over-par, 74, on Sunday. She is currently in fifth place for the tournament with an even-par, 70-74-144. Xavier's Emma Welch was a remarkable 6-under-par today and leads all individuals at 7-under-par.

Freshman Renee Rane (New Delhi, India) had two rough holes in her second round, but used a birdie and 13 pars to reduce their damage. For the round, she shot a 4-over-par, 76. Currently, the Pirate newcomer is in eighth place with a 4-over-par, 72-76-148, for the tournament.

Another Pirate playing in her first BIG EAST Championship also dazzled on Sunday. Freshman Kasumi Tran (Swansea, Wales) birdied two of the final four holes to power a career-best 2-over-par, 74, in round two. She moved up five places in the individual standings and is currently tied for 14th with an 8-over-par, 78-74-152.

Rounding out the Pirates' lineup on Sunday, Anne-Sofie Ekman (Copenhagen, Denmark) shaved three strokes off her round score. The sophomore shot an 8-over-par, 80, in round two. For the tournament, she's 19-over-par with an 83-80-163.

The club features three nine-hole courses. The competition will play the first nine holes on the Dogwood Course and the second nine on the Magnolia Course. Designing Callawassie Island's award-winning championship 27-hole course, Tom Fazio took advantage of the island's natural beauty to create a juxtaposition of visual drama and superb playability. Magnificent live oaks and magnolias, as well as freshwater ponds and the surrounding saltwater marsh, come into play on most holes. Inspiring vistas and abundant wildlife make nature part of the golf experience.

The BIG EAST will crown a team champion, which earns an automatic berth to the 2024 NCAA Championship. The individual champion also receives an NCAA Championship invitation.Â
