SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Daria Safian (Moscow, Russia) had a career-high 20 kills and three Pirates collected double-doubles, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Providence, 3-2 (17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 11-15), on Halloween Friday.
Â
The Hall played from behind from the start, tying the match twice before falling in set five. The Hall never led in the defining set, losing another key starter to injury, Sadie Reich (Wantagh, N.Y.) before the final set.
Â
Safian had 20 kills, only six attack errors, a .341 attack percentage and six digs.Â
Â
Gwen Adler (Barrington, Ill.), Rylee Nelson (Mazeppa, Minn.) and Reich all collected double-doubles. Adler had a team-high 23 assists and 14 digs, Nelson tallied a team-high 18 digs to go with 12 assists and Reich had 11 kills and 14 digs.
Â
SET 1:
Reich and Subasili had a block to give The Hall a 6-4 lead early in set one, but Providence answered with a 7-1 run to grab an 11-7 advantage. A kill by Alex Rasmussen (Lincoln, Neb.) cut The Hall's deficit to 19-14, but the Friars responded with three straight points and went on to win 25-17 in set one.Â
Â
SET 2:
The second set was tied seven times and was arguably the closest set of the match. Trailing 13-11, The Hall scored six straight, and a kill by Loukia Papadakos (Stoufville, Ontario) gave the Hall a 17-13 advantage. The Friars were down 23-19, but then scored four straight to tie the set at 23. A kill by Reich put Seton Hall in set point, and an attack error by Providence gave it a 25-23 victory to tie the match.
Â
SET 3:
The Hall had a .061 attack percentage in set three as Providence took the match lead. Seton Hall never led in the third set and the friars raced out to a 23-14 advantage. The Pirates attempted to rally with a 7-1 run to cut Providence's lead to 24-21 and force a time out. The Friars regrouped, however, and scored the final point after the break to win, 25-21.
Â
SET 4:
The Pirates answered in a big way with a .368 attack percentage in set four to tie the match. The Hall never trailed in the fourth set, scoring six of the first seven points. With the score tied at 17, the Pirates scored six in a row, and a kill by Adler gave them a 23-17 advantage. Kills by Hanna Labanowska (Olszewnica Stara, Poland) and Rowan Carr (Lakeville, Minn.) provided a 25-19 victory.
Â
SET 5:
With the score tied at four, Providence scored four of the next five points and led the rest of the way. A kill by Labanowska cut The Hall's deficit to 12-10, but the Friars answered with back-to-back points to enter match point. After a Friars' attack error, they tallied the winner, 15-11, to claim their second five-set win over Seton Hall this season.
