HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – Freshman Marta Aguilar (Casares Malaga, Spain) is the individual leader in the clubhouse and was the only player to shoot under par in round one of the BIG EAST Championship at Riverton Pointe Golf & Country Club on Saturday.
Â
Aguilar had four birdies and 11 pars in route to a 1-under-par, 71, on Saturday. It's the sixth sub-par round of her young career, which remarkably already places her tied for sixth for a career at Seton Hall.
Â
Aguilar enters Sunday's second round with a two-stroke lead over Xavier's Emma Welch for the tournament lead.
Â
While Aguilar was brilliant on Saturday, the rest of the Pirates largely struggled. As a team, The Hall shot a 32-over-par, 320, in round one and is in fifth place among the six BIG EAST programs. Xavier, which is seeking its sixth straight BIG EAST title, is the current leader at 10-over-par, followed by Butler (19-over), Georgetown (20-over) and Creighton (22-over). St. John's is currently behind The Hall at (35-over).
Â
Senior Ana Sarrias Pro (Cadiz, Spain) was only 2-over-par at the turn, but struggled on the back nine. She finished with a 9-over-par, 81.
Â
Sophomore Kasumi Tran (Swansea, Wales) and freshman Amelie Gras (Elancourt, France) are both 12-over-par after an 84 on Saturday. Tran had trouble early, but parred four of the final five holes. Gras was having a solid round, but had a double-bogey on No. 15 and carded an "8" on the par-5 No. 18 hole.
Â
Sophomore Renee Rane (New Delhi, India) rounded out Seton Hall's lineup with a 15-over-par, 87.
