New Providence, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team fought a close match with Marist, ultimately dropping a 4-3 decision to the Red Foxes in its home opener Friday night at Murray Hill Tennis & Fitness.
Each team won three singles matches in straight sets, so it was the doubles point that proved to be the decider as Marist won a tiebreaker at No. 1.
"It was a close battle from start to finish today," said head coach James Enzler. "I give Marist a lot of credit, they played with great confidence and deserved the win they got today. Doubles just got away from us at the beginning, but I believe we adjusted well and hopefully will continue to learn from our mistakes going into tomorrow and the rest of the season."
The Pirates got one doubles win when Kira Farrakhova and Jaden Davidson breezed past their opponents, Cloe Clements Sorde and Vihana Sheresta, 6-0. Marist got one back at the No. 3 position to bring it all to No. 1. Niamh Campbell and Anastasia Sereda went back and forth with Viktoria Lorentzon and Tessa Wachtel, resulting in a tiebreaker. The Marist duo came out on top narrowly, 7-5 after some very solid back and forth.
In singles, Campbell, Ellie Coe and Rachel Benoualid were all straight set winners.
Seton Hall will get right back out on the court Saturday at noon at NJIT.
