FARMINGTON, PA. – Junior Will Hennessee (Tulsa, Okla.) rallied to earn a share of the individual title and lifted the Seton Hall men's golf team to the title of the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday.
Hennessee showed his championship grit late in the final round. Leading by three strokes, the junior shot a 4-over-par, 7, on the 17th hole which put him into second place entering the final hole. On the 18th, however, Hennessee regrouped and collected a birdie on a long putt to pull into a tie for first place and collect a share of the individual title. For the round, he had four birdies and an eagle on the par-5, No. 8 hole to fuel a 2-under-par, 70. Hennessee tallied a 5-under-par, 69-72-70-211 for the tournament.
It's the first individual title of Hennessee's career and his sixth top-5 finish. Hennessee finished the tournament with a 5-under-par, 69-72-70-211. Remarkably, it's the third time in four tournaments this fall that he has shot 5-under-par for a tournament. Hennessee now has eight sub-par tournaments for his career, which is tied for fifth-most in program history.
As a team, The Hall shot an impressive 9-under-par, 279, in the final round to edge Eastern Michigan by one stroke to win the team title. The Eagles matched Seton Hall's 9-under-par final round to provide the late round drama. For the tournament, the Pirates were the lone team to shoot under par with a 1-under-par, 297-287-279-863. Two BIG EAST competitors were also in the field. Connecticut finished sixth, 15 strokes behind the Pirates, while St. John's was seventh, 19 strokes behind The Hall.
It's Seton Hall's second team victory in four tournaments this year, and the 38th victory in program history. It's also its 27th sub-par tournament ever.
Blake Goodnight (Dallas, Texas) matched his career-best round on Tuesday, shooting four birdies and 14 pars for a 4-under-par, 68. The sophomore rocketed up the leader board to finish in a tie for 11th place with a 1-over-par, 74-75-68-217.
