
Pirates Struggle with Friars' Defense; Fall 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Gwen Adler (Barrington, Ill.) collected a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball fell to Providence, 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 17-25), on the road on Friday.

Seton Hall struggled with the Providence defensive front line that entered the match leading the BIG EAST in blocks per set. The Friars had 16.0 team blocks for the game, a season-high for a Pirates' opponent.

Adler registered her eighth double-double of the season with a match-high 18 assists to go with 10 digs. Three Pirates had at least eight kills with Maddy Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.) impressing with eight kills, no attack errors and a .471 attack percentage.

SET 1:
Seton Hall went on a 4-1 burst early in set one and a kill by Daria Safian (Moscow, Russia) gave it a 10-6 advantage. Providence, however, responded with a 10-2 run to grab a 16-12 lead. The Hall cut its deficit to 19-18, but the Friars answered with a 6-0 run to win the first set, 25-18. The Pirates had only a .030 attack percentage in the opening frame.

The Hall opened the second set by scoring six of the first seven points to grab an early lead. Trailing 9-7, Providence went on a 4-1 burst to grab their first lead of the set, 11-10. The Pirates jumped ahead again, 13-12, but the Friars scored four in a row to open a 16-13 advantage. A kill by Alexis Opland (Woodbury, Minn.) capped a three-point burst by The Hall and gave it a 20-19 lead. The Friars again responded, and a 5-0 spurt burnt both Seton Hall timeouts and put them in set point, 24-20. A kill by Safian staved off one set point, but ultimately, the Pirates fell in set two, 25-21.

The Pirates never led in set three and Providence used a 5-1 run to build a 14-9 advantage. A kill by Alondra Villanueva (Lima, Peru) cut The Hall's deficit to 16-12, but the Friars took off again, and four straight points gave Providence a commanding 20-12 advantage. The Friars cruised to a 25-17 set three victory.Â

The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when they head Storrs, Conn. to play UConn. Match time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
