In this role, Sweeney is the primary media contact and spokesman for several Seton Hall Athletics programs including women's basketball, women's volleyball and both men's and women's golf. During his time in South Orange, he has worked closely with nearly every athletics program, including seven years as the primary media contact for men's basketball. As a team's "sports information director," Sweeney is responsible for the program's biographical and story writing, compilation of statistical information, game day management, media relations, historic archiving, graphic design, social media, advertising, promotion, photography and video elements, among others. In addition to his many roles working with teams, he also serves as an emcee and public address announcer for several athletics-related events and banquets.
Â
This is Sweeney's second stint as a full-time employee with the Pirates. During the 2000-01 season, he served as an intern in the office of Athletics Communications.
Sweeney is a two-time Media Coordinator for the NCAA East Regional of the Division I NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Most recently, he and his staff oversaw a record media turnout of well over 500 members of the press, on both the local and national level during the 2025 event. Sweeney coordinated all press conferences, interview sessions as well as media seating and credential services. Sweeney served in the same role in 2011.
Â
Prior to his return to Seton Hall, Sweeney spent six years as the Director of Special Projects for The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. In working closely with athletics departments across the country, he was involved extensively in organizing events for new Hall of Fame inductees while planning the Foundation's annual Award Luncheon and black-tie Awards Dinner held in New York City. Sweeney was also the primary media liaison for some of the Hall of Fame's highest profiles such as NFL greats Jerry Rice, Dan Marino and Steve Young. Other responsibilities included acting as director of the NFF's National Scholar-Athlete program, serving as assistant coordinator for the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) Standings as well as organizing and researching for the College Football Hall of Fame selection process.
Â
A 2000 Seton Hall graduate, he has been the District II Football and At-Large Coordinator for the College Sports Communicator's Academic All-America Program since 2003. He is also an active member of the United States Basketball Writers Association and the Football Writers Association of America. Sweeney has also held broadcasting and media relations positions with the New Jersey Nets as well as minor league baseball teams, the Newark Bears and New Jersey Cardinals. An accomplished voice talent, Sweeney has served as a public address announcer for several sports and has recorded numerous commercials, advertisements and voiceover samples for local companies and teams. He's also served as an emcee for several functions and is a licensed wedding officiant.
Sweeney currently resides in Budd Lake, N.J. with his wife Laura, their son, Adam, and their daughter, Shea.
