Seton Hall (3-1) failed to score a basket over the final 11 minutes of the first half and trailed by 13 points with 15:53 left. The Pirates used a 12-0 run to tie it with 9:53 to go, but the Colonials responded with a 10-2 spree to pull away.
Darius Lane scored a career-high 24 points for the Pirates, who were bidding for their first 4-0 start since the 1989-90 season. Senior Shaheen Holloway had seven assists, giving him a school-record 530 for his career.
Seton Hall had 28 turnovers and was stuck in a comeback mode for most of the game after missing 15 of 22 shots in the first half.
The Pirates fought back behind Lane, who went 8-for-11 while his teammates were a collective 11-for-31. A 3-pointer by Lane cut the deficit to 47-38, and the sophomore guard scored twice from beyond the arc in a 12-0 blitz that made it 50-all.
Francisco de Miranda then scored on a follow for the Colonials, and Mike King sandwiched two driving layups around a free throw by de Miranda to make it 60-52 with 5:34 left.
Brown was 9-for-26 and GW shot only 38 percent, but Seton Hall was done in by poor shooting and 14 turnovers in each half.
After the Pirates used an early 11-2 run to go up 15-9, the Colonials scored 19 of the next 23 points, including 11 straight by Monroe. The Pirates made seven of their first nine shots, then missed their final 13 attempts before halftime.
