Seton Hall became just the second lower seed to win a first-round
game in this year's NCAA Tournament through the first 20 games of the
tourney. Both "upset" wins came with #10 seeds (Gonzaga, Seton Hall)
defeating No. 7 seeds (Louisville, Oregon).
Shaheen Holloway's 27 points in today's game were one off his season
high of 28, set in a 69-65 win over Drexel at Walsh Gym Nov. 27.
Holloway's career high of 31 points came against Boston College on Jan.
4, 1997. Holloway also tied a career high with 11 field goals today.
Holloway has now scored 21 or more points three times in his last
four games after scoring more than 21 just one other time (11/27 vs.
Drexel) the previous 26 contests this season.
Seton Hall improved to 13-6 all-time in the NCAA tournament with
the victory and 6-1 in first-round games.
The Pirates improved to 3-0 in overtime this season, having already
defeated Georgetown (65-62 Jan. 8) and Rutgers (65-63 Feb. 9) in the
extra session.
Oregon trailed 57-47 with 7:07 remaining in the second half but used
a 13-2 run in the nex 5:07 to take a one-point lead, 60-59, on Bryan
Bracey's layup with two minutes remaining.
The Ducks dropped to 6-5 all-time in NCAA tournament games and have
not won a game in the tourney since 1960.
Oregon's A.D. Smith scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the
first half. After shooting 6-for-10 from the field in the first 20
minutes, he shot 0-for-3 from the field in 14 minutes in the second
half.
Seton Hall's Samuel Dalembert had six blocks, giving him 103 for
the season, the second-highest total in school history behind Glenn
Mosley's 125 in 1976-77. It was the 10th time this season that Dalembert
has recorded five or more blocked shots in a game.
