Schmidt replaces Chris Collins, who accepted a position at his alma mater, Duke, in July. Schmidt will assume the responsibilities of film exchange, breaking down game film and scouting, among other duties.
"We're thrilled to have a person of Billy's character," Amaker said. "He brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and enthusiasm to our program. We're very fortunate to have him join our staff."
At Northwestern under head coach Kevin O'Neill, Schmidt was responsible for the coordinating of recruiting, prospect evaluation, scouting, game preparation and coaching NU's post players. He also directed Northwestern's summer basketball camps and conducted off-season individual skill development programs.
Prior to Northwestern, Schmidt was an assistant at the University of Tennessee under O'Neill from 1994-97. He joined O'Neill's staff in 1994 as a administrative assistant and was promoted to assistant coach in 1996. At Tennessee, Schmidt was responsible for on-campus recruiting, scouting and coaching the Volunteer big men.
From 1992-94, Schmidt was assistant coach and resident manager at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, VA, where he was responsible for off-season player development and scouting of opponents. Oak Hill won the national championship during both of his seasons there.
Schmidt, a native of Stamford, CT, is a 1992 graduate of Wake Forest University, where he earned his bachelor of arts degree in Social Studies Education. He earned his master of arts in sports management from Tennessee in 1996.
At Wake Forest, Schmidt was a student manager and coaches' aid under Dave Odom for four years.
