SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (March 28, 2001) - Senior Misty Beaver (Machesney Park, IL) threw a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts in game one and freshman Mary Carroll Smith (Nutley, NJ) went 3-for-3 with a home run in the nightcap to lead the Seton Hall softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook at Cameron Field, 5-0 and 9-2.
Seton Hall improves to 8-5 with the victories, while Stony Brook falls to 7-5.
Beaver spun a gem in the first game, allowing just one hit and two walks in seven innings of work. It was her second straight one-hitter. She struggled only in the fourth inning, when a walk, a wild pitch on a strikeout and a passed ball led to runners on second and third with two outs. Beaver struck out the final batter of the inning, her fourth strikeout in the inning, to end the threat.
Seton Hall scored in the bottom of the first inning when Smith, who doubled, was driven home on a single by junior shortstop Kim Jackson (Rockaway, NJ). In the second inning, junior Ranae Bart (River Edge, NJ) crushed her first career home run over the center field wall with two runners on, making the score 4-0. Jackson knocked in Smith again with a single in the fifth inning for the Pirates' fifth run.
In game two, the Pirates responded to two Stony Brook runs in the top of the first with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. Jackson drove in two runs on a bases-loaded single, but injured her ankle after being thrown out in a run-down and had to leave the game. Freshman catcher Meg Berry (Mahwah, NJ) doubled in two runs later in the inning. Berry finished the day 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI.
The Pirates homered three times in the second game. Senior outfielder Marlena Kotynski (Lyndhurst, NJ) hit a solo shot in the third inning and Smith, who was 5-for-6 on the day, homered to straightaway center to lead off the fourth inning. Senior third baseman Vickie Lamb (Yorktown Heights, NY) also homered in the fourth inning to right field.
The Pirates totaled 14 hits in the second game, which was more than enough support for sophomore Christina Shanko (Delmont, PA), who improved to 4-3 on the season, giving up seven hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out eight in six innings of work.
Seton Hall embarks on a key BIG EAST weekend, taking on Pittsburgh in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m. and then traveling to Notre Dame for two games on Sunday, April 1, at 11:00 a.m.
