Pirates Fall Short in Season-Ending Loss to Creighton

How It Happened
With Providence losing to Villanova mere moments before the game began, the stakes for the Pirates were simple: a win would land them in the BIG EAST Tournament. After her 5.1 innings of relief during yesterday's 11-inning marathon against Creighton, Kelsey Carr returned to start for the Pirates. Before she could step into the circle, however, the Pirates earned themselves a 1-0 lead after an RBI single by Olivia Gilbert scored Caroline Hobbes. The Pirates could've collected more, however, as the inning ended on a contentious interference call the very next play that took a potential Pirate run off the board.

In the bottom half of the first, Carr collected the first two outs before finding herself in a bases-loaded jam. A pop up got her out of the inning and sent the Pirates back to the plate. After loading the bases in the second inning, Hobbes knocked a one-out RBI single through the right side to extend Seton Hall's lead to 2-0. The Pirates, however, would strand another three runners as the next two batters failed to drive in a runner to end the inning.

Those stranded runners came back to bite the Pirates as an RBI double by the Blue Jays would score one runner, but an errant throw by the Pirates' outfield advanced the batter home, making it a 2-2 game, after a long review by the umpires.
As the game progressed, the Pirates struggled to land the blow that would break the 2-2 stalemate. After stranding five runners through the first two innings, by the end of the sixth inning the Pirates had stranded nine runners.
After retiring the first batter of the sixth inning, Carr exited the circle potentially the final time in her collegiate career. With Kyra Kreuscher now entering the game, the Pirates hoped a fresh arm could make the difference. After dropped foul ball turned an out into a walk on Kreuscher's first batter, momentum fell away from the Pirates. With two runners on and two outs, an RBI single by Creighton put them up 3-2 at the end of six innings.
With their playoff lives on the line and the heart of the Seton Hall lineup coming up to bat, Carr opened the inning on a walk to put the tying runner on base. Sadly, the Pirates would not find that tying run. A pair of strikeouts, followed by a game-ended grounded out handed The Hall a 3-2 loss and eliminated them from qualifying for postseason play.
