How It Happened
With only one BIG EAST game left to play, the Pirates came out of the gates quickly in this final conference tilt. In the first inning, after reaching on a leadoff error, Angelina Benitez came around to score on a double steal to give Seton Hall the early 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, St. John's responded immediately during the bottom of the frame. The Red Storm, aided by a one-out error, scored five runs to send Seton Hall down 5-1 after the first frame came to an end.
In the aftermath of that opening stanza, Kyra Kreuscher entered the circle looking to provide a stabilizing force for the Pirates as they searched for a way back into the game. While Kresucher provided two clean innings immediately, the Pirates' offense could not reciprocate that help, collecting only two walks and no hits after the top of the fourth.
Eventually, Kreuscher could hold back the Red Storm and their offense no more. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, St. John's brought home another two runs to extend the Seton Hall deficit to six, 7-1, after four full innings.
After the Pirates' fifth inning rally attempt fell short, they broke through the scoreless drought in the sixth inning. The opening two batters of the frame reached base, giving Erin Howard another major RBI opportunity this series. Howard did not hesitate, launching a ball over the left field wall to pull the Pirates within three, 7-4.
The Hall needed only three outs in the bottom of the frame to secure a chance to cut the three-run deficit to none in the seventh. Unfortunately, St. John's produced another three runs to make it a 10-4 game entering the seventh. Eventually, the Pirates secured runners on the corners with two outs in the seventh inning as they looked to tie things up. Even though the Pirates were able to plate one run, they could not complete the comeback and fell 10-5 against St. John's.
