Swimming and Diving Teams Defeat Georgetown

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – The Seton Hall swimming and diving teams swept Georgetown on Wednesday. The men’s team (3-1) won, 102-65, and the women’s team (2-2) defeated Georgetown 93-74. The men’s team gathered nine first place finishes, and the women posted four.

The men’s team was led by junior Hide Murakami (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Angelo D’Errico (Syosset, N.Y.) who posted two first place finishes each. Murakami won the 50 butterfly in 27.47, and won the 50 backstroke in 31.29. D’Errico swam 33.96 in the 50 breaststroke, and tied teammate Mike LaRosa (Easton, Pa.) in the 50 freestyle for first with a time of 26.39. Junior Tim Curran (Beverly, Mass.) won the 100 individual medley in 1:07.71, edging out the second place finisher by one hundredth of a second. Senior Matt Farber (Mifflinville, Pa.) and freshman Matt Rienzo (Wallingford, Conn.) won the 100 and 200 freestyles, swimming times of 58.60, and 2:10.42, respectively. The men’s team also took both relays, winning the 200 medley relay in 2:00.42, and the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.05.

The women’s team was led by senior Ashley Johnston (Windsor, Conn.) who swam to two first place finishes. Johnston placed first in the 100 individual medley in 1:13.12, and in the 50 freestyle, swimming 31.95. Sophomore Haley Ottenbreit (North Branford, Conn.) won the 50 backstroke in 34.70. Ottenbreit also placed second in the 100 individual medley, timing 1:16.07. Freshman Christine Zuffante (Staten Island, N.Y.) placed second in the 50 backstroke (35.23), and the 200 freestyle (2:19.61). Junior Trudy Wojciehowski (Fair Haven, N.J.) earned two second place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyles, timing 29.47, and 1:04.80, respectively. Senior Ashley Pantall (Hainesport, N.J.) also added a second place finish for the Pirates in the 50 breaststroke, swimming 38.18. The women won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:59.33.

The Pirates will next face Rutgers and Rider at Rutgers on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 4:30 p.m.
