BALTIMORE, Md.The Seton Hall men’s basketball team defeated Morgan State, 83-63, on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House. The Pirates improve to 2-1 with the win, while the Bears fall to 0-4 with the loss. Freshman Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the team in scoring with a career-high 20 points, while junior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded the Pirates first double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The win was a team effort, as five players scored in double figures. Harvey was 7-of-8 from the field and also added a team high six assists, while Laing also dished out four assists. Senior Grant Billmeier (Pennington, N.J.) started his first game of the season, netting 14 points and grabbing four rebounds in a season-high 33 minutes. Sophomore Paul Gause (Pittsgrove, NJ) added 13 points, eight rebounds and a career-high five steals in just 27 minutes of play.
Carl Marshall (Chicago, Ill.) provided a welcome boost off the bench with eight points in only 10 minutes of play. The senior guard provided a calming presence at the point, made 5-of-6 free throw attempts and was quick to loose balls. Senior Stan Gaines (Chicago, Ill.) tallied 10 points and four rebounds despite having early foul trouble.
The Pirates jumped out to an early lead that was never relinquished. With a 9-2 run to start the game, the Pirates extended the lead further with an 8-0 run that ran the score to 25-11. Seton Hall continued to build the lead, as the Pirates led the Bears, 41-20, at the half.
Seton Hall led by as many as 29 points in the second half despite playing a relatively even second stanza, as Morgan State tallied 43 points to the Pirates 42. Seton Hall shot 54.5% from the field for the game, and held Morgan state to only 38.2%.
Seton Hall will host St. Peter’s on Monday, Nov. 27, at Continental Airlines Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
