EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.- The Seton Hall men’s basketball team went on an 11-2 run to start the game, as they defeated Monmouth, 83-49 on Monday. Junior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Pirates, who had four players in double-figures, with 17 points in 26 minutes of action. Seton Hall out rebounded the Hawks 37-26, and shot 51.6 percent from the floor, while holding Monmouth to 37.5 percent.
Laing scored 13 of his points in the first half and added four steals. Seniors Grant Billmeier (Pennington, N.J) and Stan Gaines (Chicago, Ill.) had strong games. Billmeier scored 11 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Gaines had 10 points and blocked two shots. Freshman Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 14 points for the Pirates.
After the quick start for Seton Hall, Monmouth cut the deficit to 23-19 with 7:08 left in the half. Senior Carl Marshall (Chicago, Ill.) and Gaines hit back-to-back three’s to jump start a 15-2 run, as the Pirates went into the break leading, 43-24.
Junior Jamar Nutter (Bloomfield, N.J.) scored all of his nine points on three straight three pointers to open the second half to extend the advantage to 52-27 with 16:32 remaining. The Pirates took their largest lead of the game on a Paul Gause (Pittsgrove, N.J) layup, at 79-38 with 4:31 left as the Pirates went on for the win.
Alex Nunner led the Hawks with 11 points, and Mike Shipman had a game-high seven rebounds.
The Pirates return to action at the Continental Airlines Arena on Saturday, Dec. 9, against Penn State. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
