SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall head coach Bobby Gonzalez announced on Friday that 6-foot Brooklyn native and St. Benedict’s (N.J.) Prep product Eugene Harvey, widely considered the best available point guard in the nation, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Seton Hall in the fall. Harvey announced his intentions at a press conference in Brooklyn Friday afternoon.
“Eugene is a monumental recruit for us,” Gonzalez said. “We desperately needed a point guard, and we got a big-time player and person. In my career I’ve signed a lot of New York City point guards wherever I’ve been, and Eugene is potentially the best point guard I’ve ever recruited, signed or had the ability to coach.”
Harvey, who played for former Seton Hall guard Danny Hurley at St. Benedict’s in Newark, represents a major recruiting coup for Gonzalez during the late signing period, particularly with the loss of point guard Donald Copeland to graduation. This season as a senior, Harvey averaged 16.0 points per game and 8.0 assists per contest for St. Benedict’s, one of the top teams in the country. The Gray Bees finished 30-2 this past season.
Harvey, a two-time all-state honoree, is ranked as the 67th-best prospect in the class of 2006 by the Rivals Network, which also had him as the 11th-ranked point guard in the class. He is a consensus Top 100 player among all of the scouting services, a pure point guard known for his outstanding speed and ability to distribute the ball.
“He’s a rocket,” Gonzalez said. “He is a tremendous talent who makes everyone around him better. For us to get a kid of this quality, from Brooklyn, who played at a terrific program in St. Benedict’s, this late in the recruiting process, we could not be more ecstatic.”
Harvey was named the MVP of the Jordan All-America Classic in April for the Suburban team in a matchup of New York area all-stars. He also participated in the Roundball Classic All-Star Game on Apr. 9.
Harvey joins 6-4 guard Kashif Pratt (Bronx, N.Y./Rice HS) as Seton Hall’s signees for next season. The late signing period ends on May 17.
