PROVIDENCE, R.I. Two Pirates received individual BIG EAST Conference honors Monday after Seton Hall went 1-1 last week. Freshman Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named Rookie of the Week for the third time this season and junior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) was added to the Weekly Honor Roll for the second time.
Harvey recorded 21 points in Seton Hall’s 77-72 win over Rutgers on Wednesday. He also chipped in three rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes. With the Pirates clinging to a slim lead, Harvey hit four straight free throws with under 20 seconds remaining to seal the victory. On Saturday at Providence, he scored 16 points and grabbed two steals in another 38 minutes. Currently Harvey leads the BIG EAST in scoring and assists among rookies.
Laing tied Harvey for a game-high 21 points in the victory over Rutgers. With a tremendous all-round performance, he also grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and played all 40 minutes. At Providence on Saturday, Laing came one point shy of his career-high with 24 points. He also chipped in four rebounds and a steal in 38 minutes of action.
Currently, Laing (16.9 ppg) and Harvey (16.3 ppg) rank fourth and seventh respectively, among the BIG EAST leaders in scoring. They also rank third (35.29) and fifth (34.00) respectively, in minutes played.
Also earning weekly honors, Providence’s Herbert Hill was named BIG EAST Player of the Week. Those joining Laing on the Weekly Honor Roll include: Roy Hibbert of Georgetown, Levance Fields of Pittsburgh, Darryl Watkins of Syracuse and Frank Young of West Virginia.
Harvey, Laing and the rest of the Pirates will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 11 when they host St. John’s at Continental Airlines Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 973-275-HALL.
