SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Seton Hall men’s basketball sophomore Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has been named a Pre-season Candidate for the 2007-08 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. The honor is given to the top collegiate male basketball point guard annually spanning across all divisions within the game by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The selection criteria emphasizes leadership, team work, success, and fundamentals as being critical parts for the game of basketball as a point guard. Nominations are solicited from across the country from head coaches and the winner is selected by a Blue Ribbon Selection Committee made up of the biggest names in college basketball.
Harvey took the BIG EAST Conference by storm in his rookie season, tying for fifth in scoring with 16.5 points per game and being named Rookie of the Week three times. Starting all 29 games, he scored in double-figures 27 times and led the Pirates in assists per game (4.2) and free throw percentage (.839). At year’s end, Harvey was one of only three unanimous selections to the league’s All-Rookie Team.
In his first game of the new, 2007-08 campaign, Harvey exploded to tie his career-high with 27 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He also added five rebounds, four assists and four steals while playing all 45 minutes of the Pirates’ overtime victory against Monmouth.
