SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team coasted to a 78-41 win over George Mason on Friday night, improving to 3-0 in the process. The Pirates will face San Diego in the championship game of the Seton Hall Basketball Classic, presented by Anaconda Sports and The Rock, on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Freshman guard Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) led three Pirates in double-figures with a career-high 16 points. Junior forward Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.) added 14 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) scored 12.
Lateisha Wade led the Patriots (0-2) with nine points. George Mason will play in the consolation game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
SHU trailed briefly in the first half before a Williams 3-pointer knotted the game at seven with 14:41 left in the first half. The Pirates then tacked on the next nine points, capped off by a Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) jumper, to go up 16-7.
Seton Hall gradually pulled away, using a Brown triple to go up 36-17 with 3:29 left in the first half. An Ela Mukosiej (Bialystok, Poland) lay-in in the final minute put the Pirates ahead 38-19 at the break.
Eight points from Womack early in the second half highlighted a 12-1 run that saw the Pirates take command at 50-20 with 15:46 on the clock. The Patriots got back to within 15 on two Wade free throws, but SHU responded with a 14-3 run to put the game away.
Seton Hall’s defense came up huge once again as George Mason was forced into 24 turnovers and 26.5% shooting. The Pirates allowed only 13 made field goals for the second consecutive game.
Mukosiej totaled nine points, three rebounds, five assists, and four steals for the Hall, while freshman center Kashmere Joseph (London, England) had a career-high nine points to go along with four rebounds. The Pirates shot 45.0% from the field while committing only 11 turnovers.
Seton Hall followed up its 36-point win on Monday night over Fairleigh Dickinson with tonight’s 37-point victory, the largest spread since a 42-point (88-46) win over Sacramento State on Nov. 25, 2001. The Pirates are now 3-0 for the first time since the 1995-96 campaign.
