OREM, Utah - The Seton Hall women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season on Wednesday afternoon, falling in overtime to Utah Valley, 78-73. Freshman Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) scored a career-high 19 points in the loss.
Robyn Fairbanks led the Wolverines (5-0) with 39 points. Junior forward Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.) tied a career-best with 15 rebounds for the Pirates (4-1) while also scoring 13 points. Sophomore guard Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) added 14 points and five assists.
After Brown put SHU ahead by two in overtime, Fairbanks sparked a 9-0 Wolverine run with a three-pointer that put Utah Valley ahead, 74-67 with 40 seconds remaining. The Pirates drew no closer than five the rest of the way.
Trailing by one in the first half, Seton Hall went on a 12-0 run, capped off by consecutive 3-pointers from junior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) and Williams, to take a 25-14 lead with 6:59 left in the first half. The Wolverines responded with the next six points, but Brown answered for the Hall with a trifecta and an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it 31-20. Sophomore Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) followed with a 3-point play of her own to give SHU its biggest lead of the game with 2:58 to go. The Pirates took a 36-24 edge into halftime.
The Wolverines chipped away as the second half began, closing to within 39-36 after two Sandy Marvin foul shots. The Pirates managed to stay in front, and eight straight points from Williams, including a 4-point play, gave SHU a 57-48 edge with 9:20 left in regulation.
Fairbanks took over down the stretch, scoring the final nine Wolverine points. Her jumper on the interior with 45 seconds remaining sent the game into the extra session.
Utah Valley outshot Seton Hall, 40.4% to 38.4%. The Pirates held a 45-38 edge on the glass.
Seton Hall returns to action on Friday at Brigham Young.
