PROVO, Utah - The Seton Hall women's basketball team dropped its second straight contest on Friday night, falling to Brigham Young, 47-43. Sophomore Ashley Booker (San Diego, Calif.) led the Pirates (4-2) with 12 points and a career-high six steals.
Junior Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.) added nine points and eight rebounds, while senior Amber Harris (Washington, Pa.) grabbed 10 boards. Mallary Carling led BYU with 15 points.
SHU had a chance to tie late in the game, but committed a turnover trailing 45-43 with three seconds left. Carling was fouled with one second remaining and hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory for the Cougars (3-2).
After a Womack lay-up just over a minute and a half into the game, the Pirates went ice cold for the remainder of the period. BYU went on a 12-0 run, capped by a Mindy Nielson 3-pointer, to go up by 10 points with 12:37 left. SHU finally hit a field goal after a nine-minute drought, an Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) trifecta that made it 14-7. The Hall managed just two more field goals the remainder of the half and went into halftime trailing 28-14.
The Pirates turned the tables as the second half started as their defense began to throttle the BYU attack. A 9-0 SHU spurt out of intermission cut the deficit to 28-23 with 14:16 to play. Keilani Moeaki ended the drought with a bucket at the 13:51 mark, but a trio of SHU scores made it a one-point game with 11:25 left.
BYU regrouped and managed to stretch the lead back to eight after Carling's jumper with 6:41 to play. Womack answered with a score inside, followed by a 3-pointer and 15-foot jumper from Booker that made it 40-39 with 5:07 to go. The Cougars added to the lead with a pair of free throws, but Womack scored again to bring SHU to within one at the 1:38 mark.
Two more BYU foul shots pushed the lead to three, and the Cougars came up with a defensive stop to regain possession. Womack came up with a steal on the other end and hit Booker for a fastbreak lay-in that brought SHU to within 44-43 with 25 seconds left. After nearly coming up with a steal, SHU fouled Carling with 15 seconds left. She hit 1-of-2 from the stripe, setting up the Hall's final possession.
The Pirate defense nearly brought SHU all the way back as BYU hit only 5-of-24 field goals in the second half. The Hall made 17 steals for the game, including five by sophomore Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.).
Seton Hall returns to action on Nov. 28 at Iona.
