NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak on Wednesday night with a 63-57 win over Iona. The Pirates (5-2) were led by junior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) and freshman Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) with 13 points each.
Thazina Cook and Lauren DeFalco both netted 15 points for the Gaels (1-4).
Iona jumped out to a 5-0 lead after Cook opened the game with a 3-pointer before hitting a mid-range jumper with 16:45 left. Williams finally got the Pirates on the board with a trifecta at the 15:46 mark, and Rhodin tied the game with a steal and lay-in moments later.
Iona led by four before a 7-0 SHU run, highlighted by a 3-point play from sophomore Ashley Booker (San Diego, Calif.), gave the Hall a 16-13 edge with 11:24 remaining. The Gaels tied the score after a Cook bucket and a Naeemah Ricketts free throw, but Williams and sophomore Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) combined for the next eight Pirate points to make it 24-16 with 6:59 on the clock. Seton Hall led by as many as nine three times before taking a 33-25 edge into intermission.
The SHU lead fluctuated between seven and 10 before a Rhodin 3-pointer made it 43-30 with 11:58 remaining. The Gaels picked up their defensive pressure, forcing three Pirate turnovers in 94 seconds to close to within 45-39, but the Hall responded with eight straight points to regain command.
Iona managed to hang around, and two Tiara Headen free throws with 1:27 left made it a 59-55 game. The Gaels had a chance to draw even closer after an SHU miss, but an Iona turnover with 57 seconds left gave the ball back to the Pirates. Brown and Rhodin each went 2-for-2 at the line down the stretch as the Hall picked up its first road win of the season.
Senior Amber Harris (Washington, Pa.) posted nine points and 10 boards for SHU, with junior Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.) adding nine points and five rebounds. The Pirates forced 26 Iona turnovers, helping to overcome a 42-40 deficit on the glass.
Seton Hall returns to action next Thursday at Northwestern.
