NEWARK, N.J. - Senior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 27 points on 12-of-13 shooting as the Seton Hall men's basketball team knocked off Delaware State, 77-54, to improve to 9-3 on the season. Laing connected on his first 12 field goals to tie John Ramsay's mark of consecutive field goals made, which was set against St. Michael's in 1974.
Senior Jamar Nutter (Bloomfield, N.J.) scored 12 points, and went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out six assists, committing just one turnover, and scored seven points. Harvey failed to reach double-figures in scoring for the first time this season, and just the third time in his career.
Laing started the game by scoring 14 points in the first ten minutes to put Seton Hall ahead, 27-13. The Pirates ended the frame by going on a 13-5 run, holding the Hornets (3-9) to just one field goal in the final 8:51 to head into the break with a 41-23 lead.
In the second half, Laing got off to another quick start by scoring Seton Hall's first five points to make it 46-27 with 17:36 left. A tip-in by junior Augustine Okosun (Benin City, Nigeria) gave Seton Hall its largest lead, 73-45, with 5:07 to go as the Pirates went on for the win.
Roy Bright had 24 points and was the only Delaware State in double-figure scoring.
The Pirates shot 50.9 percent from the floor, including 62.5 percent in the first half, while holding the Hornets to 40.8 percent for the game.
Seton Hall opens BIG EAST play against Connecticut on January 3 at Prudential Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
