NEWARK, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's basketball team rode freshman Jeremy Hazell's (Harlem, N.Y.) hot-hand to a 92-82 victory over Louisville. Hazell netted a career-high 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting to help the Pirates (12-6, 2-3) overcome a 14-point deficit in the second half.
Senior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore Larry Davis (Middle Village, N.Y.) each had strong all-around games for Seton Hall in the win. Laing scored 25 points, dished for six assists, pulled down five rebounds, and made four steals. Davis was good for 10 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Juan Palacios converted on a layup to cap a 14-0 spurt that put the Cardinals (13-5, 3-2) ahead, 65-51, with 12:16 remaining, but they were not able to shake the Pirates. Freshman Mike Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) provided a spark off the bench after knocking down a jumper from the corner to make it, 74-67, and blocking a dunk attempt by Earl Davis on the other end of the floor at the 7:49 mark.
After Hazell hit a pair of trifecta's, Mike Davis found a slashing Brian Laing who hit a layup and was fouled for a three-point play to give Seton Hall a 78-77 lead with 4:35 left.
Edgar Sosa canned a trey from the corner on the next possession to put Louisville back on top, but Hazell had the answer once again, drilling two more bombs from beyond-the-arc to put the Pirates back on top, 84-80, with 3:25 on the clock.
The Pirates only converted on 4-of-12 free-throws down the stretch, but the Cardinals would not score another field-goal the rest of the game.
A David Padgett lay-in gave Louisville a 26-14 lead with 10:38 in the half. Eventually, Seton Hall put together a 10-0 run to take a 42-41 advantage, but the Cardinals went into the half with a 45-43 edge.
Terrence Williams recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Jerry Smith scored 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting.
The Pirates made up for getting outrebounded and outscored in the paint by taking care of the ball (seven turnovers) and creating 19 points off 15 turnovers. Seton Hall shot 62.5 percent in the second half and assisted on 22-of-30 field goals for the game.
Next up for the Pirates, a road-trip to Providence on January 24. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
