PROVIDENCE, R.I. Seton Hall men’s basketball sophomore Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week. The 6-foot-5 guard has scored at least 20 points in four of Seton Hall’s five games to start the season and was named to the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-off All-Tournament Team.
Last season, Hazell was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week once, but this is the first time Hazell has received Player of the Week honors from the conference.
Hazell opened the season by scoring 23 and 21 points respectively in easy victories over Saint Francis and Columbia. When the competition improved at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-off last week, so did Hazell’s performance. On Thursday, the Harlem, N.Y. native scored only 15 points, but hit the game-winning three-pointer to give Seton Hall a 63-61 victory over #19 USC. Against Memphis on Friday, Hazell scored a career-high 32 points in a losing effort. To wrap up the tournament, Hazell scored a team-high 23 points in a 77-73 win over Virginia Tech. Seton Hall placed third of eight teams in the tournament and Hazell earned All-Tournament Team honors.
For the season, Hazell ranks third in the BIG EAST with 22.8 points per game. He is also averaging 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game.
Louisville’s Samardo Samuels was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. Members of this week’s Weekly Honor Roll include: Connecticut’s Hasheem Thabeet, Marquette’s Wesley Matthews, Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody, Pittsburgh’s DeJuan Blair and Villanova’s Dante Cunningham.
Hazell and the rest of the Pirates will return to action vs. Delaware on Saturday, November 29 at Prudential Center. Game time is scheduled for noon.
