Women's Basketball Falls at San Diego, 74-72

SAN DIEGO, Calif. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team fell to 4-1 on the season after losing at San Diego on Friday night, 74-72.  The Pirates could not hang on to a one-point halftime lead as they met defeat in their first road game of the season.

The Hall fell behind 6-0 before sophomore Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) knocked down a 14-footer with 17:13 on the clock.  Down 12-5, senior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) scored on a follow off the glass, Williams drained a jumper, and junior Nicole Emery (Baldwin. N.Y.) converted a fast break layup to cut the lead to one with 12:36 to play.

Kiva Herman hit three straight buckets for the Toreros as they took a 20-15 lead with 9:43 remaining.  Seton Hall again drew to within one on a third consecutive field goal by senior Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.) before taking the lead on an interior basket from Emery that made it 21-20 at the 7:25 mark. 

An old-fashioned 3-point play by Womack gave the Pirates a 27-25 lead with 3:18 on the clock, and her 14 first-half points helped SHU go into the break with a 32-31 edge.

A 15-5 run out of the break put the Toreros ahead 46-37 at the 14:05 mark.  A jumper by Herman pushed it to 50-39, but an 11-2 spurt, capped by two free throws from junior Ashley Booker (San Diego, Calif.), made it 52-50 with 8:07 left.

San Diego maintained the lead and went up 63-57 on a layup from Amber Sprague with 4:20 to go.  The Toreros led by nine when Williams hit a short jumper to break an SHU drought of over three minutes with 1:41 remaining.  She would hit again 40 seconds later to cut it to five, but the Toreros hit enough free throws down the stretch to claim the 74-72 win despite a 60-foot 3-pointer by Booker at the buzzer.

Womack finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Hall, while Williams added 19.  Herman scored a game-high 28 points to lead San Diego.

The Hall hit just 33.3 percent from the floor while San Diego connected on 46.0 percent.  The Pirates won the battle of the boards, 45-30.

The Pirates are back in action on Dec. 6 when they host Marshall at 2:00 p.m.
