NEWARK, N.J. For the third time in four games, the Seton Hall men’s basketball team rallied from a halftime deficit as the Pirates topped Delaware, 75-70. Junior Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half to key the Pirate (5-1) comeback.
Sophomore Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) scored 17 points, connecting on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Senior John Garcia (Brentwood, N.Y.) had 13 points and seven boards.
The Blue Hens (2-4) scored the first 11 points of the game, while Seton Hall failed to convert on its first nine shots. Freshman Jordan Theodore (Englewood, N.J) came off the bench and nailed a runner in the lane to put the Pirates on the board with 15:25 in the half.
Theodore continued to excel with Harvey on the bench with a pair of fouls, coming up with a three and a jumper to make it 25-23 with 6:13 on the clock.
Seton Hall pulled within 27-25 after a Hazell jumper with 4:57 left, but Delaware responded with an 8-2 run and went into the intermission ahead, 38-31.
The Blue Hens got off to another quick start in the second, and pushed the advantage to 45-34 with 18:05 to go. The Pirates went to a full-court press and began to create turnovers. Harvey came up with back-to-back steals and lay-ins to spark a 12-2 run and give Seton Hall its first lead of the game, 52-49, with 12:30 remaining.
The Pirates extended the lead to 67-62 after three Hazell free-throws, but Delaware’s Marc Egerson netted five straight to tie the score with 4:16 to go. Seton Hall stayed in front, 69-67, and a floater from Harvey made it 71-68 with 1:19 left.
After missing some crucial free-throws Delaware took the ball with 14 seconds to go, trailing 73-70. Jawan Carter missed a trifecta from the wing, but D.J. Boney picked up the offensive board and kicked it to Edwin Santiago whose last second trifecta was blocked by Garcia to seal the game.
Egerson led all players with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Jim Ledsome had 13 points and 10 boards.
Seton Hall returns to action on Tuesday, December 2, against Monmouth at
Prudential Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
