NEWARK, N.J. Sophomore Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) tied a career-high with 32 points as the Seton Hall men’s basketball team rolled to a 101-78 victory over Monmouth. Hazell connected on 6-of-9 from downtown. The Pirates improve to 6-1 on the season.
Junior Robert Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Senior John Garcia (Brentwood, N.Y.) had 12 points and six boards in just 16 minutes of action. Junior Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added seven points, nine assists, and a pair of steals.
Senior Paul Gause (Pittsgrove, N.J.) swiped two straight inbounds passes and converted on a pair of easy buckets to give the Pirates a 20-8 lead in the opening five minutes of the contest. Harvey connected with a fully-extended Hazell for an alley-oop to give Seton Hall a 43-20 edge with 6:32 in the half.
Despite shooting 53.8 percent from the field, the Hawks (1-7) trailed by 24 points at the intermission.
Seton Hall began the second half with an 8-2 run, and led by as many as 39 points in the half. Freshman walk-on Matt Cajuste (Old Westbury, N.Y.) sealed the victory when he banked home a trifecta with 2:45 remaining to put the Hall over the 100-point mark for the first time since December 27, 2007 against James Madison.
The Pirates forced 14 turnovers in the first half, and turned them into 18 points. The Hawks (1-7) took better care of the ball in the second half, committing just four turnovers. Seton Hall shot 52.2 percent from behind the arc, and held a 43-30 edge on the boards.
Sophomore Mike Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Travis Taylor led Monmouth with 18 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
The Pirates will host California Baptist at 7:30 p.m. on December 9 at
Prudential Center.
