Women's Basketball Surges Past Marshall, 73-52

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team used an explosive second-half performance to knock off Marshall on Saturday, 73-52.  The Pirates (5-1) outscored the Thundering Herd (5-2) 43-19 in the second half to overcome a three-point deficit at the break.

Junior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) and freshman Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) led the way with 18 points each for the Hall.  Senior Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.) recorded her third straight double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Alyssa Hammond paced Marshall with 11 points.

The Pirates came out strong, grabbing a 16-9 lead on a Womack basket at the 11:37 mark.  Emery knocked down a pair of free throws two minutes later as the Hall took its biggest lead of the half at 23-13.

Marshall put together a 16-3 run over the next six minutes, capped by a jumper from Chantelle Handy, to take a 29-26 edge.  Seton Hall junior Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) put the Pirates back in front with a layup at the 2:32 mark, but the Herd scored the half’s final four points to take a three-point lead into intermission.

Emery capped a 10-2 spurt out of the break as the Pirates grabbed a 40-35 lead.  Marshall proved resilient, and a basket from Tynikki Crook with 11:37 left tied the game for the final time at 45.

Seton Hall hit 10 free throws over the next four-plus minutes to seize control of the game and take a 56-48 advantage.  Senior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) drilled a huge 3-pointer with 5:57 left to push the lead to 11, part of a 15-0 run the sealed the win.  Emery capped the spurt with a pair of free throws with just over two minutes left to send the lead over 20.

Seton Hall shot 45.7 percent on the night while holding Marshall to 31.7 percent, including just 18.5 percent after the break.  The Pirates forced 21 turnovers and outrebounded the Herd, 42-33.

Seton Hall is back in action on Dec. 9 when they host Colorado at 7:00 p.m.
