SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) posted her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Seton Hall women's basketball team defeated New Hampshire, 54-45. The Pirates (5-3) travel to Colorado on Sunday for a 3:00 p.m. game.
Junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) added 13 points, while senior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) netted 10. Sophomore Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) grabbed a career-high nine rebounds to go along with six points for the Hall. The Wildcats (3-3) were led Jill McDonald with 17.
McDonald led New Hampshire to an early 14-9 lead before the Pirates took over. Williams and freshman Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) drained three-pointers as part of a 12-2 run that saw the Hall gain a 21-16 lead with 6:04 left in the first half. The Wildcats tied things up with the next five points, but Kandice Green scored the half's final bucket with three minutes still on the clock to give the Pirates a 23-21 lead at intermission.
Seton Hall pushed its lead to six on several occasions, but New Hampshire would not go away, eventually evening the score at 37 on an Amy Simpson jumper with 10:24 remaining. Williams responded with a crucial bucket from beyond the arc, and the lead was back at four when Green converted a lay up that made it 42-38.
Williams sank a jumper at the 6:13 mark to give the Pirates a 46-40 cushion. Both teams found points hard to come by down the stretch, but New Hampshire mounted one last run to get within 48-45 on a McDonald bucket with just over a minute to go. But senior Letitia Curry (Pennsauken, N.J.) sank a tough shot inside for the Hall with 32 seconds remaining, and Green iced the game with four free throws as time wound down.
The Pirates shot just 35.2 percent from the game but hit 11-of-12 free throws, compared to 2-of-7 for the Wildcats. Seton Hall finished with a 36-31 edge on the glass.
