NEWARK, N.J. Pittsburgh’s duo of Sam Young and Levance Fields each posted double-doubles to guide the #1 Panthers past the Seton Hall men’s basketball team, 89-78. The Pirates are now 15-13 overall and 6-10 in the BIG EAST.
Young finished with a game-high 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds. Fields distributed the ball well, handing out 10 assists and added 10 points.
Sophomore Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) finished with 25 points. Junior Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 17 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor, and six steals.
Pittsburgh (26-3, 13-3) took a 14-7 lead with 14:23 left in the first half after a Brad Wanamaker steal led to a dunk from Gilbert Brown. Hazell pulled Seton Hall within one after a three on the left wing. Junior Robert Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) deflected the inbounds pass to Paul Gause (Pittsgrove, N.J.) who found Hazell in the same spot, and Hazell converted, giving the Pirates a 22-20 edge with 10:10 before the intermission.
Another trifecta from Hazell gave SHU its largest lead of the game, 29-24, with 7:03 to go in the half, but the Panthers scored five quick points to tie the score less than two minutes later.
The Panthers regained the lead after a three-pointer from Wanamaker, and Pitt took a 36-31 advantage into halftime.
The Pirates scored the first four points of the second half to make it, 36-35. The Panthers strung together an 11-2 run in just 2:04 to extend the lead to 50-39 with 15:21 remaining in regulation. Gause knocked down 1-of-2 from the foul line to cut the deficit to 56-46 with 13:40 to go, but that would be as close as Seton Hall would come.
Pittsburgh held a 44-21 edge on the glass, and scored 13 second-chance points. The Pirates forced 23 turnovers, but only scored 19 points off turnovers, while the Panthers scored 23 points off of just 15 SHU turnovers.
