DiRocco Tosses Complete Game Shutout; Baseball Blanks VCU, 7-0

RICHMOND, VA.   Sophomore pitcher Joe DiRocco (East Hanover, N.J.) (1-1) tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout and junior Michael Rogers (Portland, Ore.) drove home the only runs Seton Hall would need with a double in the top of the fourth inning, as they shutout Virginia Commonwealth, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon in Richmond. With the win, the Pirates improved their record to 4-5.

With a scoreless game entering the fourth inning, senior Chris Affinito (East Brunswick, N.J.) led off with a single, while sophomore Sean Gusrang (Burlington, N.J.) drew a two-out walk, to set up the two-run double by Rogers. 

After a sacrifice-fly by sophomore A.J. Rusbarsky (Freehold, N.J.) in the top of the fifth inning gave Seton Hall a, 3-0, lead, red-shirt sophomore Frank Esposito (Staten Island, N.Y.) added an RBI single in the same inning for a, 4-0, advantage.

The Hall would add more insurance to their lead when red-shirt senior Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) reached on a Rams error in the top of the sixth scoring Rusbarsky and Rogers.  Sophomore Ed Brown (Edison, N.J.) scored the final run in the top of the eighth with a solo home run to left field, his first of the season.

Rogers completed his day with two hits, two RBI, and a run scored.  Esposito equaled Rogers’ two base knocks as the only Pirates with multiple hits.  Rusbarsky finished as the leader with two runs scored.

Darryl Stringfield (0-1) suffered the loss allowing four runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.

The Pirates return to the field when they play NJIT Friday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field as the Pirates host the first annual Rawlings Strike Out Cancer Tournament.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
