South Orange, N.J. – The Pirates used strong pitching to edge out a 3-1 midweek victory over Princeton on Wednesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium. Five Seton Hall pitchers combined to limit the Tigers to just four base hits and one run.

How it Happened
The bats started off hot for the Pirates, scoring a run right away in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff walk and ensuing stolen base for Gabe Cavazzoni, he would score on a groundout from Aiden Dill to take a 1-0 lead. Aidan Sengenberger followed with a one out single to look and continue the damage, but Princeton escaped on a 6-4-3 double play.

Sengenberger would cash in in the third, doubling Seton Hall's lead. Cavazzoni legged out a double down the left field line, later advancing to third after an errant pickoff throw. Sengenberger then collected his second hit of the day, a single to right to give Seton Hall a 2-0 lead.

Pirate starter Jason Kuhn cruised through four hitless innings to start his outing, but Princeton tacked on a run against him in the fifth to cut the deficit in half. Matt Pontari came on in relief with runners at the corners and no one out and managed to escape the jam unscathed. Pontari then worked in and out of trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs but inducing a groundout to end the inning.

Derek Benzinger came on to work a clean seventh, followed by a scoreless eighth from Ryan Reich to maintain the one-run lead. A productive groundout from Ty Acker in the bottom of the eighth gave the Pirates some breathing room with three outs left to get. John Higgins took the ball in the top of the ninth, setting down the side in order to cap off the win.
