Expectations for the 1988-89 team were not high. They had just gone to their first-ever NCAA Tournament the year before. They lost two 1,300-point scorers to graduation and were predicted to finish in seventh place among nine BIG EAST teams. Instead, this “Band of Pirates” shocked the sports world by winning their first 13 games, being ranked nationally for most of the season and capping their remarkable year with an improbable run in the NCAA Tournament that took them into overtime of the National Championship Game.
Last season marked the 20th anniversary of that memorable run. To commemorate the anniversary, Seton Hall produced “Band of Pirates – The Story of Seton Hall’s Magical Ride to the NCAA National Championship Game.” The 60-minute documentary includes footage of the 1988-89 Seton Hall Pirates as well as exclusive interviews with the team, coaches and administrators and various members of the sports world. A bonus feature includes coverage of this season’s 20th Anniversary Final Four Ceremony held on Jan. 25, 2009.
