SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - A strong defensive effort led LSU to a 58-40 win over the Seton Hall women's basketball team in the Anaconda Sports "The Rock" Seton Hall Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates (1-2) will meet Massachusetts tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. to wrap up the weekend's games.
Junior Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) posted her second straight double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Hall. The Tigers (2-2) were led by LaSondra Barrett and Katherine Graham with 14 points each.
A runner by sophomore Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) gave the Hall a 7-6 lead three and a half minutes into the contest. Junior Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) later pushed it to an 11-8 edge with a putback, and a pair of free throws from Green at the 13:16 mark put the Pirates ahead by five.
Jeanne Kenny put the Tigers back ahead with a floater midway through the first half that made it 16-15. Graham extended the run with two foul shots, and Kenny later drained a three-pointer that made it 21-16 with just over eight minutes remaining.
Graham extended the run to 15-3 with a score on the baseline, and Taylor Turnbow scored on a putback to give LSU a 25-16 lead. Courtney Jones converted a fast break bucket, and Adrienne Webb's 17-footer made it 29-16. Junior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) finally scored in the lane for the Pirates to break the spell, and Morris followed with a jumper at the 2:20 mark from the top of the key that made it 29-20. LSU accounted for the half's final two points to take a 12-point lead into halftime.
Webb knocked down a three less than a minute into the second half as the Tigers assumed a 34-20 lead. The lead remained fairly steady until Simmons cut it to 10 with two twisting lay-ups in the span of a minute that made it 39-29 with 12:35 on the clock. It was a gain a 10-point game after Green's six-footer with 8:45 to play, and Wood got loose on a fastbreak the next time down as the Hall closed to within 41-33.
With 7:48 to play, freshman Elaine Swaby (Paterson, N.J.) sank a free throw to cut the deficit to seven for Seton Hall, and Green later hit a step-back jumper that made it 43-36 with six minutes remaining. After the Tigers stretched their advantage back to 11, Simmons again scored on a tough layup with 3:25 to go to make it 47-38. But Barrett drilled a three-pointer on the other end for LSU, and the lead remained in double-digits the rest of the way.
Seton Hall was limited to 26.3 percent shooting from the field and just 9.1 percent from three-point territory. The Pirates finished with a 45-43 edge on the glass.
