SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team improved to 5-1 on the season when they defeated Providence, 162-126, Saturday afternoon at the Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium.
Nine swimmers picked up first place times as the men's team finished seven races ranked one, two, and three. Kevin Webster (Leawood, Kan.) earned first place times in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke with freshman Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) finishing second in both races. Sophomore Austin Acheson (Olathe, Kan.) completed the 200-yard backstroke in third to round out the race.
Acheson was sandwiched between senior John D'Errico (Syosset, N.Y.) and his first place time in the 200-yard butterfly and freshman Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) who finished the race third.
The individual meet began with junior Pete Gingeleskie (Bloomfield, N.J.) recording a first place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle followed by sophomore Ian Keyser (Petersburg, N.J.) and freshman Jon Ropson (McKinney, Tex.). Gingeleskie continued his afternoon with a third place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke behind sophomore Ryan O'Shaughnessy's (Coral Springs, Fla.) first place score and Ian DeLisio's (Woodstock, N.Y.) second place score.
O'Shaughnessy and DeLisio finished second and third, respectively behind senior Kenny Pritchard (Castro Valley, Calif.) in the 100-yard breaststroke. The senior from California would later record another first place score in the 100-yard freestyle in front of junior Matt Holland (Horsham, Pa.) and freshman Joey Lacus (Wethersfield, Conn.). The latter two-some also finished one and two in the 50-yard freestyle with senior Michael Oldham (Silver Lake, Oh.) finishing third.
The 200-yard freestyle event also gave the Pirates valuable points against their first BIG EAST opponent this season when sophomore Brian Pauling (Sewell, N.J.) became the 13th member of the men's roster to qualify for the BIG EAST Championships finishing first followed by freshmen Tyler Benson (Fairport, N.Y.) in third and Tyler Naumann (Middletown, Conn.) in fourth.
On the diving boards, junior Will Penny (Suffern, N.Y.) finished third in the each of the two 1-meter rounds.
The men's squad will return to action Friday afternoon when they host St. Peter's. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
