NEWARK, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's basketball team rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit, but ultimately fell to Marquette, 84-83, in overtime on senior day. The Pirates are now 16-11 overall and 7-9 in BIG EAST play.
Sophomore Jeff Robinson (Trenton, N.J.) led the way with a career-high 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting. Senior Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) flirted with a triple-double with 13 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds.
Seton Hall chipped away at the Golden Eagle (19-9, 10-6) lead in the second half, and junior Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) drained a three from the left corner to give the Pirates their first lead of the game, 42-41, with 13:03 left.
Marquette went on a 6-1 run over the next two minutes to regain control, 47-43. SHU continued to keep the pressure on and tied the score, 56-56, after a layup by Robinson with 7:30 remaining in regulation.
The Golden Eagles answered with six unanswered, but the Pirates strung together another rally down the stretch.
Freshman Ferrakohn Hall (Memphis, Tenn.) picked up a deflected ball for a slam to spark a 7-0 outburst, capped by a clutch hoop by Harvey to put the Hall on top, 63-62, at the 3:55 marker.
The clubs swapped baskets in the final three minutes, and a pair of free-throws by Harvey knotted the game, 69-69. Marquette's Lazar Hayward had a chance to win the game in regulation but missed a three from straightway at the buzzer.
The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the extra session, and built the lead up to 78-71 after two foul-shots from Jimmy Butler.
Hazell connected on back-to-back deep three pointers, and then electrified the crowd of 9,425 with a four-point play to bring the Pirates within 82-81 with 25 seconds to go.
Marquette left the door open by hitting 2-of-4 from the charity stripe in the waning moments, but Hazell misfired on two three's and the Golden Eagles went on for the win.
Marquette had five players score in double-figures, led by Hayward, who netted 23 points and added eight boards.
Both teams shot well from the floor, with SHU connecting on 50 percent and the Golden Eagles knocking down 47.5 percent. The Pirates held a 38-28 edge on the glass.
The Pirates will face Rutgers at the RAC on Thursday, March 4 at 7:00 p.m.
