SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard formally announced his full staff for the upcoming 2010-11 men's basketball season on Wednesday.
Shaheen Holloway and Dan McHale, who were assistant coaches under Willard at Iona, will join him at Seton Hall. Holloway returns as the Pirates' new associate head coach, while McHale is an assistant coach. Chris Pompey, formerly an assistant coach at New Mexico State, will also be an assistant at Seton Hall. Stephen Sauers, who was the Pirates' director of basketball operations from 2006-08, will return in that capacity for Seton Hall this season. Grant Billmeier and Casey Stanley round out Willard's staff as coordinators of basketball operations.
"I think we've assembled a talented staff of both familiar faces and new personnel to coach these young men and best represent Seton Hall," Willard said. "We've hit the ground running and are already looking forward to next season."
Shaheen Holloway returns for his third stint with the Seton Hall men's basketball team. A three-time All-BIG EAST performer, he's the Pirates' all-time leader in assists and captained the 2000 team to a birth in the NCAA Sweet-16 as a senior. After graduation, Holloway played professionally in Europe before returning to Seton Hall as a member of former head coach Bobby Gonzalez's basketball staff. Following a year as administrative assistant at Seton Hall, he joined Kevin Willard's staff as an assistant coach at Iona College where he has remained for the last three seasons.
Chris Pompey joins Coach Willard's staff after serving four years as an assistant coach at New Mexico State. Known for his recruiting prowess, Pompey brought in the student-athletes that guided the Aggies to three 20-win seasons a pair of Western Athletic Conference titles and an appearance in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Pompey spent six seasons at Hartford before becoming an assistant at Hampton. In just under a month as an assistant at Hampton, Pompey helped bring a Top-50 recruiting class to the Pirates' program. At Hartford, Pompey helped build the Hawks into one of the premiere teams in the America East Conference. Hartford had the second-best turnaround in the country from 2001-02.
Dan McHale comes to Seton Hall after serving the last three seasons as an assistant coach for Willard at Iona. McHale was also with Willard during their days at the University of Louisville under head coach Rick Pitino. At Louisville, he served as Director of Video Operations and was responsible for advance scouting video of Cardinal opponents as well as evaluation video for U of L players. As an undergraduate, McHale was a student manager for four years at the University of Kentucky (1997-2001) working closely with former UK and current Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith.
Stephen Sauers returns to his familiar role as Director of Basketball Operations, the same position he held for two seasons under former head coach Bobby Gonzalez (2006-08). Sauers rejoins Seton Hall after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach for Willard at Iona. Sauers long background in coaching began at Marist upon his graduation from the University at Albany in 1990. He served under former Red Fox head coach and current Army women's coach Dave Magarity from 1990-2004. Sauers moved up the ladder during his tenure at Marist, starting as a Graduate Assistant Coach, a full-time Assistant by 1993, Senior Assistant Coach in 1996, and Associate Head Coach in 2001.
Former Seton Hall center and fan favorite, Grant Billmeier, returns as coordinator of basketball operations. Billmeier was a stalwart in the Pirates' frontcourt from 2003-07. The 6-foot-10 shot-blocker played in 106 career games and helped guide two of his teams to NCAA Tournament appearances. Following graduation, he played professionally in Europe before returning to his high school alma mater, St. Patrick's, as an assistant coach.
Casey Stanley joins the Seton Hall family as coordinator of basketball operations after serving one season under Willard as Iona's graduate assistant and video coordinator. Stanley's responsibilities included travel coordination, video scouting and exchange and assisting the coaching staff in game day and practice preparation. He was promoted after a four-year stint as Iona's team manager.
