
NEUFELD WINS RUTGERS INVITATIONAL; Team Finishes Second Among 17 Programs

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior John Dawson Neufeld (Calgary, Canada), playing in his second career tournament as a member of the Seton Hall men's golf team, won the individual crown at the Rutgers Invitational on Saturday. The Pirates as a team finished second among 17 competing programs.
Neufeld entered Saturday at even-par, three strokes off the individual lead. The junior college transfer fired a 3-under-par, 69, to win the tournament with a three-round score of 74-68-69-211 and finish 2-under-par overall. Neufeld's individual victory is the first for the Pirates since Kyle Morris won the George Washington Invitational on March 26, 2006.
As a team, Seton Hall maintained their second place standing after two rounds with a 5-over-par, 289, on Saturday. The Pirates finished 19 strokes behind Newberry, the team champion, and 13 strokes ahead of the third place team, Columbia. Newberry, the only team to finish under par for the tournament, shot a 5-under-par, 847.

Including Neufeld, Seton Hall had three individuals finish in the tournament's top five out of 88 golfers.
Defending BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, Brandon Park (Weston, Fla.), recorded his second straight under-par round on Saturday. The sophomore finished fourth overall with a 1-over-par, 75-69-70-214 for the three-round event. Park has finished in the top-5 in both of Seton Hall's first two tournaments this fall.
Troy Spencer (High Point, N.C.), the lone active Pirate to have previously played at the Rutgers Invitational, was consistent throughout the event. He finished one stroke behind Park with a 2-over-par, 70-72-73-215 to secure fifth place overall.
Rounding out the Pirates' scoring were Gary Dunne (Wicklow, Ireland) and Jamie Shirley (London, England), who were both seeing their first action of the season. Dunne, a freshman playing in his first career tournament, finished tied for 32nd with a 13-over-par, 78-71-77-226. Shirley was also a bit inconsistent finishing with a 32-over-par, 84-78-83-245.
The Pirates will return to the links next weekend with the Adams Cup of Newport Collegiate Invitational in Middletown, R.I., Sept. 19-21.
