LOUISVILLE, KY - Freshman Fuquan Edwin (Paterson, N.J.) scored a career-high 18 points, but it was not enough as the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell in coach Kevin Willard's return to Louisville, 73-54.
To go with his 18 points, Edwin also tied his career-high with nine rebounds.
Seton Hall's offense struggled from the start as the Cardinals scored the first 10 points of the game. Junior Herb Pope (Aliquippa, Pa.) converted inside off a lob from Keon Lawrence (Newark, N.J.) for the Pirates first points with 13:54 remaining in the first half. But the Pope bucket only briefly interrupted Louisville's opening run. The Cardinals would score the next 14 points, leaving Seton Hall in a deep, 24-2 hole with 10:17 to go before the half.
The Pirates (7-8, 1-2) connected on just one of their first 14 shots from the floor.
Senior Jeff Robinson (Trenton, N.J.) hit a three-pointer to end the Louisville run and jump-start the Pirates offense. Over the next 3:14, Seton Hall would go on an 11-2 run to get it to within 13 at 26-13.
The teams traded buckets for most of the remaining half and Louisville took a 36-21 lead into halftime.
The Pirates shot just 22.6% from the floor in the first half compared to 46.9% for Louisville. Seton Hall also committed eight first half turnovers.
Jeff Robinson led the Pirates in the first half with nine points.
Louisville's Gorgui Dieng slammed home a put-back to cap a 13-2 run for the Cardinals early in the second half and make the score 51-28 with 12:57 remaining in regulation.
The lead grew to as many as 28 and then Fuquan Edwin went on a run of his own. The 6-foot-6 freshman would score 11 straight points and Seton Hall pulled to within 19 at 58-39 with 8:22 left to play.
Keon Lawrence scored on a floater in the lane and the Louisville lead was reduced to 17 points with 6:24 remaining, but Seton Hall would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Seton Hall finished at 29.0% shooting from the field, while Louisville was 47.5%.
Louisville was led by Mike Marra and Peyton Siva who both scored 14 points.
The Pirates will return to action on Saturday, January 8 as they host undefeated and fourth-ranked Syracuse at Prudential Center. Game time is scheduled for noon.
