NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team fell to Rutgers, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-22), on Friday evening. The Pirates fall to 13-8 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST play.
Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) led the team with nine kills and 24 assists. Sophomore Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) picked up a match-high 17 digs.
SHU struggled to get anything going offensively in the first set and the Scarlet Knights (8-15, 1-5) took advantage, taking a 12-8 lead after an attack error by the Pirates. Rutgers maintained the multi-point advantage the rest of the way and took the first set, 25-18.
In set two the Pirates continued to have trouble finding a rhythm, but were able to stay closer. Ultimately, they could never break through and dropped the second set, 25-21.
Despite a more spirited effort in the third set, the Scarlet Knights continued to control the scoreboard and took a 10-6 lead after a Tiffany Regmund kill. Rutgers took its largest lead of the game, 22-16, after a bad set, and completed the sweep.
SHU is back in action next Friday night, when they travel to Marquette. Match-time is set for 8:00 p.m.
