SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team travels to Teaneck, N.J. on Tuesday to take on Fairleigh Dickinson in their only dual match of the 2011 fall season.
The match will be a bit of a homecoming for Head coach Greg Wyzykowski. In the season prior to taking the helm at Seton Hall, Wyzykowski was an assistant on longtime Knights skipper Ira Miller's staff. He helped lead FDU to a NEC Championship, earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
"In tournament play, we obviously go in looking for the best finish possible but with the consolation brackets there is more of an emphasis on our players getting experience," said Wyzykowski. "When it comes to dual matches, the focus is on securing the points we need for a victory. I think that to this point in the season we have shown that we have more depth and quality throughout our lineup than we have had in years past. Tuesday will be a good opportunity for our newcomers to gain experience in this format and will help in figuring our best lineup as we move forward."
Last season, the Pirates dropped a home match to the Knights by a score of 6-1. The play of junior Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) was a bright spot for SHU on the day. Cordero tallied the Pirates' only point by winning her No. 6 singles match and also teamed with then senior Belfin Sunbul for a No. 3 doubles win.
Earlier this month, several Pirates squared off with players from Fairleigh Dickinson during play at the USTA Invitational. The Hall split the matches as senior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) bypassed Irina Dementyeva in straight sets 7-6 (5), 6-0 and sophomore Pui Wing Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) fell to Elmine Botes 3-6, 4-6.
Fairleigh Dickinson junior Anna Rapoport took home the A flight singles title from the USTA Invitational, the top flight of singles play.
"There has definitely been a positive change in our attitude both in practice and competition," Wyzykowski said. "I look for that to continue to translate into confident play and strong results."
The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. from the FDU Tennis Center.
