SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) put up her second triple-double of the season, but the Seton Hall volleyball team could not quite shake off a slow start as they fell at Syracuse, 3-1 (25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 23-25), on Sunday afternoon. The Pirates (13-10, 4-4) dropped the first two sets, won the third, and were in position to force a fifth set before a furious late rally by the Orange (16-8, 5-3) put the Hall away.
Manthorpe recorded 10 kills, 24 assists, and 16 digs to achieve her milestone. Freshman Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) led the team with 11 kills, and senior Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) posted six rejections.
The Orange came out on fire in the first set, posting 12 kills on a .476 clip and cruised to a 25-12 victory to start the match.
SHU took a 7-4 lead early in the second set before a 7-0 run gave the lead back to Syracuse. The Pirates pulled within a point, but could not leap frog the Orange as they fell behind, 2-0, in the contest.
In the third another slow start put the Hall in a 5-1 hole before the Pirates finally gained some traction. A 9-2 push, capped by a Shelbey Manthorpe kill put Seton Hall ahead, 10-7. SU would bounce back and eventually capture a three-point advantage, but the Pirates battled back to even things up at 19-19. After two points by the Orange, SHU was able to dig deep and score the final six points and an ace by Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) kept the Pirates alive.
The Pirates opened up an 18-10 lead after a block by Wrobel and Matusiak and were poised to extend the match after going up, 22-16. However, SU ripped off seven unanswered to go ahead by a point and used that momentum to finish off SHU, 25-23.
The Pirates return to Walsh Gym on Friday, October 28, against Georgetown at 7:00 p.m.
