
Swimming and Diving Sweeps Competition at Loyola

BALTIMORE, MD. – The Seton Hall men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams were in action on Saturday, going up against Lafayette and hosts Loyola (MD).
On the women’s side, Seton Hall defeated Lafayette 191-109 and downed Loyola 161-139 to remain unbeaten on the young season. Sophomore Kerrie Kolackovsky (Franklin Square, N.Y.) took home wins in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyles as well as the 100-yard breaststroke. For the second straight meet, Kolackovsky was immediately followed to the wall by Kaley Swider (Galloway, N.J.) and freshman Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y.) in the 100-yard breaststroke to round out the top-three finishers. Swider again finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with Granan close behind in fourth. Sophomores Jane Ehret (Florida, N.Y.) and Kelly Markwell (Old Bridge, N.J.) surpassed the field in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events to record first and second place times for the Pirates. Junior Brenna O'Keefe (Hyde Park, N.Y.) also had a strong showing, placing fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200-yard events. Ehret also aided the Pirates’ cause by finishing first in the 200-yard individual medley. Senior Rose Virgilio (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) swam to second place finishes in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyles. Alie Zelenky (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle. Junior Andrea Shuba (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was victorious and senior Marilyn Purvis (Old Saybrook, Conn.) took third in the 200-yard backstroke. Shuba and Purvis also posted second and fifth place finishes respectively in the 100-yard backstroke. Seton Hall also recorded a win in the 200-yard Medley Relay behind the efforts of the team of Shuba, Kolackovsky, Markwell and Virgilio. SHU’s team of Purvis, Swider, O’Keefe and Zelenky placed fourth in the event. In diving competition, sophomore Katie Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) placed first in the 1 meter dive and posted a second place score in the 3 meter dive, 36 points clear of her next closest competitor. Senior Kaitlyn Karl (Erie Pa.) finished second in the 1 meter dive. The Seton Hall men also kept their record unblemished, cruising past Lafayette 216-84 and defeating Loyola by a tally of 162-136. Sophomore Richard Dunham (Wayzata, Minn.) posted wins in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyles. His classmate Joey Lacus (Wethersfield, Conn.) placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle event. Dunham also led the way for the Pirates in the 200-yard freestyle, recording a second place time. Senior Pete Gingeleskie (Bloomfield, N.J.) finished fifth. Sophomore Matthew Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) swam to his second win in the 100-yard backstroke in as many meets this season. Benson also placed second in the 200-yard backstroke, followed closely by junior Ian Keyser (Petersburg, N.J.) in third and sophomore Evan Forbes (Cinnaminson, N.J.) in fifth. Gingeleskie and Keyser came to the wall just hundredths of a second apart as they finished second and third in the 1000-yard freestyle. Junior Austin Acheson (Olathe, Kan.) and sophomores Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) and Tyler Naumann (Middletown, Conn.) finished in succession in the 200-yard butterfly to occupy second, third and fourth positions. Junior Ryan O'Shaughnessy (Coral Springs, Fla.) was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley. Acheson swam to another second place finish in the event. SHU’s men also recorded two relay victories. The quartet of Benson, Logan, O’Shaughnessy and Dunham brought home a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. Lacus and Benson teamed with freshman James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) and senior Matt Holland (Horsham, Pa.) to take first-place points in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Ben Mitchell (Millford, Pa.) paced the men’s diving team, notching first-place finishes in both the 1 and 3 meter dives in just his second career meet. Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to the pool on Tuesday, November 1 when the Pirates host the Gaels of Iona College. Start-time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. from the Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium.
