SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – After a week off, the Seton Hall women’s tennis team is prepared for its third tournament of the fall season. This weekend, the team will travel to Flushing, N.Y. and the National Tennis Center to compete in the USTA Collegiate Invitational.
Following strong showings in their first two tournaments of the season, the team will be looking to deliver another solid performance.
“I’m hoping that we can continue to compete well and do the right things on the court,” Head coach Greg Wyzykowski said. “We will be facing our toughest competition to this point in the season and this stage will be an excellent opportunity for our girls as we continue to try and build consistency and establish Seton Hall tennis as a force.”
The Seton Hall tennis team has already accomplished a number of program firsts in the young season and hopes to continue this trend heading into play this weekend.
Two weeks ago, Freshmen Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia) and Maria Del Rosario Rodriguez (Bogotá, Colombia) brought home the first doubles title SHU has ever captured at the Eastern Championships. Rodriguez also defeated Guryanova in the final of D flight singles at the Quinnipiac Invitational.
Also at the Quinnipiac Invitational, Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) and Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) became the first Pirates to take home a doubles crown from the tournament.
“We have placed an added emphasis on doubles play this year,” said Wyzykowski. “We have built a winning mindset and as the growing confidence our team has continues to show in our play, I expect more strong results.”
In singles play, sophomores Pui Wing Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) and Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) will lead the Pirate effort. Sher is coming off a 4-1 week in which she won the HONOR consolation bracket at the Eastern Championships.
Senior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) and freshman Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) will also compete in singles for Seton Hall.
Play begins at the National Tennis Center on Saturday, October 8th and concludes on Monday, October 10th. Admission is free for all fans wishing to attend.
