SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams continued their unbeaten start to the season on Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Iona College Gaels. The women earned the win by a 173-119 margin while the men took home a 185.5-105.5 victory.
For the women, the Pirates strong effort was headlined by three individual victories from sophomore Jane Ehret (Florida, N.Y.) and two first-place finishes by senior Rose Virgilio (Bloomingburg, N.Y.).
Ehret contributed wins in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyles, as well as the 200-yard butterfly. In the 1000-yard freestyle, Ehret clocked in more than a minute before than her closest competitor from Iona. In all three of her victories, Ehret led a one, two Pirate finish. She was followed by freshman Megan Mostoller (Cheshire, Conn.) in the 1000 freestyle, sophomore Kate Dwyer (Freehold, N.J.) in the 500 freestyle and junior Brenna O’Keefe (Hyde Park, N.Y.) in the 200 butterfly. Dwyer also posted a win of her own, edging the competition in the 200-yard freestyle. Freshman Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y.) swam to a third-place finish in the event, followed closely by O’Keefe in fourth. Virgilio continued her run as a force in sprint races for Seton Hall. She again took first place points in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles, her second win in three meets in each event. Junior Andrea Shuba (Pittsburgh, Pa.) placed second in the 50-yard freestyle while Dwyer immediately followed her teammate to the wall in the 100-yard freestyle. . Virgilio also competed in the 100-yard butterfly where she came to the wall behind sophomore Kelly Markwell (Old Bridge, N.J.) who recorded another Pirate victory in the event. Freshman Sarah Dougherty (Waterford, N.Y.) rounded out an all SHU top-three in the event. Virgilio has finished no worse than second in an individual event to this point in the season. Sophomore Kerrie Kolackovsky (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and senior Marilyn Purvis (Old Saybrook, Conn.) enjoyed similarly successful outings. Kolackovsky paced the field in the 200-yard breaststroke while Purvis posted the top time in the 200-yard backstroke. The two combined their wins with second place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke respectively. In relay action, a team of Shuba, Kolackovsky, Markwell and Virgilio placed first in the 200-yard medley relay. The Seton Hall team of Markwell, Shuba, Ehret, and junior Alie Zelenky (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) posted the fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle relay. From the diving board, senior Kaitlyn Karl (Erie, Pa.) had a strong showing for SHU. Karl notched a first-place finish in the 3 meter dive and led the Pirates in the 1 meter dive, placing second. In men’s competition, six different Pirates posted individual victories on the night. Newly named BIG EAST Male Swimmer of the Week Richard Dunham (Wayzata, Minn.) was the only Pirate to record multiple individual wins. Dunham surpassed the field in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. In addition, Dunham also swam the fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley. Junior Austin Acheson (Olathe, Kan.) finished just hundredths of a second behind Dunham in the 200-yard backstroke and added a victory in the 500-yard freestyle. Acheson also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, again slightly edged by a fellow Pirate in junior Ryan O’Shaughnessy (Coral Springs, Fla.) Senior Matt Holland (Horsham, Pa.) and sophomore Joey Lacus (Wethersfield, Conn.) occupied first and second position in two individual events. Lacus edged Holland in the 50-yard freestyle by less than two tenths of a second. In the 100-yard freestyle, Holland beat out his teammate by the same slim margin. Sophomore Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly, leading three Pirates who finished in the top-four in the event. His classmate Tyler Naumann (Middletown, Conn.) finished second while another sophomore, Jon Ropson (McKinney, Tex.) clocked in fourth. Naumann also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly, the top SHU finisher in the event. Senior Pete Gingeleskie (Bloomfield, N.J.) also recorded two second place finishes on the evening. Gingeleskie followed Austin Acheson to the wall in the 500-yard freestyle and later posted the second fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley. In the 200-yard medley relay, O’Shaughnessy, Black and Dunham teamed with sophomore Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) to take first place points. The Hall’s team of Lacus, Naumann, Holland and freshman James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) recorded the night’s fastest 200-yard freestyle relay time.
