MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Despite 33 points from senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to Memphis, 82-73, to wrap up 2011 on Friday night. The Pirates finish their non-conference schedule at 7-8 and have dropped three straight.
Crew shot 13-of-20 from the floor and scored 24 points in the second half alone to spur a late rally. The total is the third highest single-game total in school history. Junior Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) contributed 14 points off the bench.
Nicole Dickson scored 24 points and Jasmine Lee posted 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Memphis
The action was fast paced out of the gate and SHU led 8-4 after a nice drive to the tin by Crew at the 16:21 mark. After swapping the lead back and forth several more times, a 12-2 run gave the Tigers (10-3) their largest lead of the half, 31-21 with 6:52 left in the half.
The Pirates turned up the defensive intensity, holding Memphis to just one field goal the rest of the period, but could only cut the deficit to 33-28 at the break.
Crew came out of the gate on a mission, scoring the first 12 points of the half for the Hall and sparked the rest of her team. A transition layup by Crew finally evened the score, 52-52, with 9:58 left in regulation. The Tigers responded with six straight to regain the two-possession lead, but the Pirates continued to fight back.
A pair of free-throws pulled SHU within three, but Dickson buried a pair of dagger three-pointers to restore a 69-60 cushion to effectively put the game away.
The Pirates finally broke out of their shooting slump in the second frame, converting on 66.7 percent from the floor and finished at a 45.9 percent clip.
The Pirates return to Walsh Gym and jump back into BIG EAST play when they host Notre Dame on Wednesday, January 4, at 7:00 p.m. For tickets, please contact the Seton Hall Ticket Office at (973) 275-HALL or via email at tickets@shu.edu.
