SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard announced today that Gene Teague (Vineland, N.J.) has transferred to the University and will play basketball for the Pirates starting the 2012-13 season.
Teague comes to Seton Hall following two seasons at Southern Illinois University where he averaged 7.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in 48 contests. The 6-foot-9, 290-pound center will not be permitted to play in games for the Pirates this season per NCAA transfer regulations, but will be allowed to practice with the team.
"I'm really excited to welcome Gene to the Seton Hall family," Willard said. "His size and post skills will certainly bolster our frontcourt next year and his presence at practice will only make our young big men better this year."
Last season, Teague averaged a team third-best 8.6 points per game and a second-best 5.3 rebounds per game. He had four double-doubles and erupted for a season-high 17 points to go with 10 rebounds in a victory over Wright State. The New Jersey native led the Salukis with a .606 field goal percentage. As a freshman, he was named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team while averaging 6.1 and 4.6 points per game.
Prior to his stint at SIU, Teague averaged 20.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game at Apex Academy Prep School in 2008-09 and was rated as the top post-graduate player in New Jersey by NJ Hoops magazine. He averaged 20.0 points and 13.0 rebounds for Living Faith Christian Academy as a senior and led his team to a 23-9 record in 2007-08.
Seton Hall will open the 2011-12 campaign with Saint Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the Prudential Center. Season tickets are available by calling 973-275-HALL.
